Overview

The Forbidden City, located in the centre of Beijing, is China's most well-preserved imperial palace. It is the largest imperial palace in the world and is considered to be one of the most important palaces of all time. The magnificent structure was the imperial palace for 24 emperors during the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368 - 1911). It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and is listed by UNESCO as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world.

✓ Explore this masterpiece of Chinese architecture and the most impressive historical site in Beijing, and discover the secrets that have been hidden for centuries.
The massive palace complex consists of 980 buildings, many of which are now open to the public. *Make sure to wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes!

There is just one entrance to Forbidden City-- the southern gate, or Meridian Gate. The usual way to reach Meridian Gate is from Tiananmen Square.

✓ Wondering why it's called Forbidden City? The imperial palace got its name from the rule that no one from outside the court was allowed to access the place without the emperor's permission. Those few caught trespassing could be, and often were, executed on the spot! Not to worry, the palace is now open to the public and is one of the most popular tourist sites in China.
